How are sedimentary habitats taken into account in public policies (MSFD and Restoration Regulation)? Overview of the French Channel and Atlantic sea
Résumé
Sandy, muddy, pebbly, heterogeneous... The seafloor is made up of a wide variety of sedimentary benthic habitats that contribute to the functioning of marine ecosystems. In Europe, these soft-bottom benthic habitats are at the heart of several public policies. All of them aim for the good environmental status of these habitats, considering anthropogenic pressures based on relatively common criteria such as their spatial extent, structure, and ecological functions. However, each imposes its own regulatory framework on Member States. Through the prism of the MSFD , the Habitat Directive and the Nature Restoration Regulation , this presentation aims to provide an overview of the work carried out in France along the coastlines of the English Channel and the Atlantic: which soft-bottom habitats are being considered? What monitoring is being implemented? What is the status of their assessments? To meet the ambitions of these public policies, potential areas of work and/or ongoing or upcoming projects will be presented, taking into account identified knowledge gaps or challenges.
