Genomes of nine biofilm-forming filamentous strains of Cyanobacteria (genera Jaaginema, Scytonema and Karukerafilum gen. nov.) isolated from mangrove habitats of Guadeloupe (Lesser Antilles)
Résumé
Biofilm-forming cyanobacteria ar e a bundant in mangr ov e ecosystems, colonizing v arious niches including sediment surface and periph yton where the y can co ver lar ge ar eas, yet hav e r ecei v ed limited attention. Sev er al filamentous isolates w er e r ecentl y isolated from Guadeloupe , illustr ating the di v ersity and nov elty pr esent in these biofilms. In this study, nine strains belonging to thr ee nov el linea ges found a bundantl y in Guadeloupe biofilms ar e c har acterized by g enome sequencing, morpholog ical and ultr astructur al examination, metabolome fingerprinting and sear c hed for secondary metabolites biosynthesis pathways. Assignation of two lineages to known genera is confirmed, namely Scytonema and Jaaginema. The third lineage corresponds to a new Coleofasciculales genus herein described as Karukerafilum gen. nov. The four strains belonging to this gen us gr oup into two subclades, one of which displays genes necessar y for nitr ogen fixation as well as the complete pathway for g eosmin production. This study g i v es new insights into the di v ersity of mangr ov e biofilm-forming cyanobacteria, including genome-based description of a new genus and the first genome sequence av aila b le for the genus Jaaginema .
