Solenomeris: un Foraminifère Acervulinidae constructeur de récifs

Abstract

Solenomeris is an encrusting organism with a branching skeleton whose attribution is still uncertain, first described as algae but considered by most modern writers as Incertae sedis. During the Ilerdian, it constituted monospecific reefs, settled or not on coral reefs from the Northeastern Spain to the French Corbières. Although the recent encrusting foraminifera are unable to build up such constructions, forming only thin limited-surface crusts in reef environment, Solenomeris must be included in the same group than Acervulina and Gypsina. The comparison between the Ilerdian Solenomeris and Acervulinidae from modern Mururoa reefs has shown a quite similar skeletal structure and test architecture. Moreover the similarity of its juvenile stages observed in the basal part of the tests, and those of some Acervulina proove definitely that Solenomeris is a foraminifera. These different characteristics place therefore Solenomeris in the family Acervulinidae, the Ilerdian species being the only able to build up real reefs.
